How to crochet a shawl with shell stitch

L

Crocheting a shawl with a shell stitch pattern is a great way to add texture and interest to your project. Here is a basic pattern for crocheting a shawl using the shell stitch:

Materials:

  • Crochet hook (size J or K)
  • Yarn (medium weight yarn such as worsted or aran weight yarn)

Instructions:

  1. Create a foundation chain of the desired width for the shawl. This chain should be slightly wider than your desired finished width, as the shawl will naturally pull in when you begin working the shell stitch pattern.

  2. Work a row of single crochets into the foundation chain.

  3. Next, work a row of shell stitches. To make a shell stitch, start by doing 5 double crochets into the same stitch, then skip the next stitch. Continue working shell stitches in this pattern until you reach the end of the row.

  4. Continue working rows of shell stitches, being careful to maintain the same pattern of 5 double crochets and skipping the next stitch.

  5. You can keep crocheting rows until you reach the desired length of your shawl.

  6. Finish off the shawl by cutting the yarn and weaving in the ends.

Note: This is a basic pattern and can be adjusted to suit your skill level and desired style. It is also recommended to use a stitch marker to keep track of rows and stitches.

Also it is important to use a gauge swatch to ensure the shawl will turn out the right size and drape correctly. Also, you can add additional stitches and/or rows, or change the stitch pattern to create different effects. Experiment with different yarns and hook sizes to achieve the desired look and feel of your shawl.
